Higher education has become an important player in the global economy. Massification, differentiation, human resource development, knowledge development and transfer, internationalization, and privatization are key characteristics of the global higher education landscape, although they manifest themselves in different ways depending on the type of institution, country, and/or region of the world.听 Traditional divisions鈥攕uch as those between North and South, developed and underdeveloped economies, universities and vocational schools, etc.鈥攁re no longer adequate to describe the dynamic and complex patterns of postsecondary education worldwide.

To highlight these and other themes, CIHE and the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) in the UK established Studies in International Higher Education, a book series published by SAGE-India. The editors of the series were Philip G. Altbach and Hans de Wit of CIHE, and Simon Marginson and Claire Callender of CGHE. In 2022, SAGE-India decided to stop publishing books and, as a result, opted to return copyright control to all book authors and editors. As a result, CIHE and CGHE are now able to offer the titles in this series, as well as several other higher education volumes, for free to readers around the world. These volumes can all be accessed here, as well as via the CGHE website.
