Teaching Reading For All
Teaching Reading for All is designed for grade 3-8 teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional coaches, and school-based leaders. Building on the work of BC faculty, the workshop reviews the current research on teaching reading and explores strategies that offer deep, academically excellent learning experiences while nurturing linguistic identities, diverse learning styles and intellectual excitement.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, learners will:
Expand an understanding of the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development
Examine the history of teaching reading and explore current research and trends in literacy education
Analyze data to inform pedagogical decisions
Learn and implement effective instructional strategies and develop lesson plans for reading instruction
Integrate understanding of the reading process with effective strategies, considering contemporary context

Our Program
Grade 3-8 teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional coaches, and other school-based leaders.
During this 15-hour professional development workshop, participants will confirm and evolve their understanding of the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development. They will review the history of teaching reading and explore current research. Most practically, participants will analyze data, learn effective instructional strategies and plan lessons for reading instruction. Ultimately, educators will evolve their practice of teaching reading and be equipped to foster literacy in diverse classroom settings ensuring all students have the opportunity to develop strong reading skills.
This workshop is divided into five modules, including:聽

- The Reader Profile聽聽
- Teaching Strategies and Scaffolds聽
- Reading Instruction in Action
Teaching Reading for All is structured as a 15-hour hybrid offering, combining both synchronous and asynchronous sessions. The content is divided into five modules, each featuring a live interactive presentation and independent work sessions. The sequence is designed to build participants' understanding through purposeful assignments and culminating activities. Each module, including the asynchronous component, is three hours in total.
The sessions can be organized in various formats, allowing for tailoring to the structure of your school鈥檚 professional development hours:
- Two five-hour live sessions with the five hours of asynchronous sessions interspersed.
- Three three-hour live sessions with the five hours of asynchronous sessions interspersed.
- Five two-hour live sessions with the five hours of asynchronous sessions interspersed.
In collaboration with members of our team, you can create a professional development arc for your staff that can be built into common planning time, grade-level meeting time, department meeting times, or half-day PDs.
