Complementing the teaching of clinical and theoretically related courses, such as ego and self psychologies, Mackey's research has focused on understanding adaptation in the lasting relationships of heterosexual and same sex couples, and secondly on the meaning that personal psychotherapy may have to the professional roles of clinical social work practitioners.
