Race, Culture & WHMP (White Heterosexual Male Privilege): Survival, Resistance, and Healing in the Current Social Climate

Founded in 2000, the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race & Culture (ISPRC) at 艾可直播 College hosts an annual national conference to address a racial or cultural issue that could 鈥渂enefit from a pragmatic, scholarly, or grassroots focus.鈥

The 2019 Diversity Challenge, the institute鈥檚 19th annual conference, is described as, 鈥渁n interdisciplinary forum in which researchers, mental health practitioners, social activists, educators, and government officials explore issues and interact with each other to address mutual concerns related to race, ethnic culture, and surviving, resisting, and healing in our current political and social climate.鈥 Scholars, students, and practitioners from across the country will share their research and experiences.

Four BCSSW MSW students will lead structured discussions on October 26. Abaigeal Doherty, MSW 鈥20, and Takia Myers, MSW 鈥20, will lead a discussion titled An Intervention for Confronting Present Day Symptoms of White Supremacist Systems: Invalidated Racial-Ethnic Trauma and the Egregious Violence of White Heterosexual Male Privilege (WHMP) from 9:30鈥11:00 a.m. And Ryan McElhose, MSW 鈥20, and Nicole Abeleda, MSW 鈥20, will lead a discussion about how to enhance the academic experience for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) students of color from 2:00鈥3:30 p.m. titled QTPoC (Queer & Trans People of Color): Decolonizing Higher Education.
