Quantum Design MPMS3 Evercool SQUID Magnetometer System
Located in Higgins Hall Room 110, this magnetometer was purchased with support from the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation program (DMR 1337567) for the exploration of novel materials and for educational and training purposes. The magnetometer utilizes a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) for magnetic flux detection, providing extremely high resolution and a critical characterization tool in the study a broad array of magnetic phenomena in complex materials. Initial ‘as-purchased’ functionality included magnetization as measured by the DC extraction and vibrating sample techniques over the temperature range 1.8 – 425 K and in magnetic fields up to 7 T. Recently added functionalities include AC susceptibility (up to 1000 Hz), a sample rotator stage, and a resistivity probe.
